2018 Bill Capen Memorial Golf Tournament

The Franklin Youth Baseball/Bill Capen Memorial Golf Tournament was held on Sunday August 19th at the New England Country Club in Bellingham Massachusetts. Eighty-four golfers and 12 volunteers participated in the tournament festivities. The weather was perfect for a golf outing. Temperature was in the mid seventies with no humidity. The staff at the country club was most accommodating and provided a cordial atmosphere for the day’s events.

Although no one won the 2018 Toyota Corolla donated by Expressway Toyota for the “hole in one” contest, an enjoyable afternoon was had by all. At the conclusion of the golf portion of the tournament, a buffet dinner was served inside the on-site tent. Sixty-five (65) raffle prizes that included Red Sox Tickets, original art work, a weekend getaway to a Maine Beach Resort and many gift cards to area salons, restaurants and businesses were given out to the winners.

After dinner the awards for longest drive, closest to the pin and lowest team score were presented to the winners. Three former FYBO members were award recipients. The team led by Matt Wenners, a former FYBO player and coach, received the lowest score award. Former FYBO player and current pitcher for Bowdoin College, Colby Lewis, received the longest men’s drive award. Lauren Egan, FYBO Snack Stand Coordinator for many years, received the longest women’s drive award. Other award recipients included Sean Prelack who won the men’s closest to the pin contest and Marianne Murphy won closest to the pin for the women. Eileen DeSorgher won the 50/50 raffle and very graciously donated it back to the scholarship fund.

FYBO would like to thank the Committee members Lauren Egan, Bill Wenners, Dave Strittmatter, Billy Capen and Larry Pollard for organizing and executing the golf tournament. We would also like to thank the many area businesses and friends who donated raffle prizes, sponsored holes and participated in the tournament. A special thank you goes out to the Strittmatter family for their continued support and participation in our scholarship fundraiser. Many family members traveled great distances in order to participate in this year’s golf tournament.

The success of this year’s tournament is measured not only by the profits realized but also by the level of enjoyment experienced by the participants. We are truly appreciative of everyone’s support for our scholarship fund raising effort. The funds realized from this tournament fund the four scholarships totaling $3,250 that Franklin Youth Baseball presents to four former players at the Franklin High School Awards night each year. Over 60 young men have received scholarship awards since the start of the Bill Capen Memorial Scholarship Fund. The Committee hopes to see even more people participate in the scholarship fundraiser that will take place in August 2019.
